Ashley Lakayla Yates, more affectionately known as 'Black Assets,' embarked on a remarkable journey from her humble beginnings in Itta Bena, Mississippi, to Baltimore, Maryland, where she forged a vibrant career in music and art. Raised in the deep South, Ashley was deeply influenced by her grandmother and grandfather, who instilled in her a love for gospel and blues music and taught her the values and power of love and being confident amidst the challenges of an impoverished and underserved community, where resources were scarce due to the lasting effects of systemic racism.

Her path to Baltimore began with a pivotal moment when she auditioned for the Morgan State University Choir and earned a scholarship for music and vocal performance. This opportunity served as a springboard, propelling her towards the bustling city of Baltimore, where she arrived as a newcomer, knowing no one, but determined to carve out a place for herself in the music scene.

Facing the realities of starting from scratch, Ashley turned to music not only as a means of personal expression and purpose but also as a vital source of income to sustain herself. She immersed herself in Baltimore's vibrant music culture, attending open mic nights daily and recording her performances on her phone. With determination and entrepreneurial spirit, she burned these recordings onto CDs, which she then sold at these same open mic events. Over the years, Ashley's grassroots efforts paid off, as she sold over 5000 CDs on the streets of Baltimore, steadily building a following and honing her craft.

In addition to her street-level entrepreneurship, Ashley began hosting shows out of her East Baltimore home, transforming these gatherings into intimate and vibrant musical experiences. This initiative evolved into what is now known as The Living Room Social, a platform she created to support and showcase local artists. Today, The Living Room Social serves as an artist incubation station, employing over 10 local artists and providing a nurturing environment for creativity and collaboration.
